Coming in May at Boulder Swing Dance

April showers bring May dances!

Mondays at Kakes

We start a new Level 1 Swing series this month on May 7th from 8-9pm.  If you are new to swing dancing, this is where you should start.

If you've completed a month of Level 1, then you're ready to start our Level 1.5 from 7-8pm.  This month we'll be focusing on swing out moves and dancing with the music.

Level 2 will be from 8-9pm and is for those who've taken two months of 1.5. This month we're on our Charleston series. Charleston is great for dancing faster, and has a fun bouncy feel.

Specialty Class: Pre-Jazz Dances

For those who have taken at least both months of Level 1.5 and up, we are offering a specialty class for the month: Pre-Jazz Dances. These are some of the dances that led to lindy hop and can mix right into your social dancing! This class will run as the Flatiron Stompers team takes a break- you can find it on Monday night from 7-8pm.

Flatiron Stompers

In June we will be starting a new session of our Flatiron Stompers team. This session will run June through August and practices will be Monday nights from 7-8pm. Routines are a great way to learn new moves that incorporate into your dancing, as well as some flashy moves. You will need to have a partner for this routine- start looking now!

SOCIAL DANCE

After class, from 9 PM-11pm we'll have our regular weekly dance. Staying for the social dance is a great way to try out moves you learn from lessons, as well as get to know your classmates, and it's free if you take a class.

ON MAY 7th Jeremy Mohney and his band are playing for us, so stick around for some great live music. We're also lucky enough to have the Denver Diamond Dolls performing!

BALBOA ROOM - May 21st
Our Balboa and Shag room will be open every 3rd Monday of the month. The first half hour is a practice session with instructor available to answer questions, then DJed music from 9:30ish-10:30. This is to give our dancers some faster music, an intimate space to dance, and hopefully provide more room on the main dance floor.

Tuesdays at East Simpson Swing

Get excited for our newest night of swing dancing!

We are starting a new lesson series at East Simpson Coffee Company in Lafayette. For March, we will be running our Level 1.5 Rhythm month from 6:30-7:30pm. This month focuses on promenades and breaking out of eight counts. Following is our Level 1 Intro to Swing lesson from 7:30-8:30pm. This level is great if you're brand new to swing or need a refresher!

May 29th - There's a fifth Tuesday this month! Look forward to some fun specialty classes that we only get to teach occasionally.

Wednesdays at SKEYE Brewing

Join us for classes on Wednesdays at SKEYE Brewing! We're starting with Balboa 1 at 6:30pm. This class is perfect is you are new to balboa or want a refresher on some of the moves. We ask that for this class, you have at least completed our Level 1 class. Of course, we still have our Level 1 for beginners starting at 7:30pm.

ON MAY 30TH we're having our monthly social dance after classes. Join us after classes from 8:30-10 PM for a beer, music and swing dancing!
AND since it's the fifth Wednesday of the month, that means it's time for specialty classes too! We get to teach some drop in classes with topics we don't get to teach all the time.

May Workshop - Slow Balboa

Have you ever come across a song slow enough that your lindy hop feels funny? Slow balboa will take your slow dancing to the next level! We are bringing Denver balboa wizards YaPing Su and Ryan Romanowski to teach you. You don't have to have any prior experience with balboa, but we ask that you have a little experience with lindy hop.

The Big Dance Fundraiser

Get ready for a fun night of dancing at a new venue- the Oddfellows Hall in downtown Boulder! Tom Weiser and his band will be playing some awesome tunes for you (and if you haven't heard him scat, well, you're in for a treat). Be some of the first dancers in the Oddfellows Hall since Glenn Miller was there himself!

May 12th
Beginner Lesson: 7:30-8:30pm
Dance with the Tom Weiser Quartet: 8:30-11:00pm
DJed music until 11:30pm

Cost: $15 gets you in the door and includes the free beginner lesson
$10 for students

The Oddfellows are a charitable organization, and to honor the legacy they have created, the proceeds from this dance will be donated to the Junior Jitterbugs in Cleveland, run by Valerie Salstrom. Valerie teaches kids in at-risk areas of Cleveland how to swing dance, and many of her students have gone on to compete and travel internationally for swing. We love supporting young swing dancers!

Swing Sweat! is continuing! The time is still 9-10am every Sunday at Kakes Studios. Wear comfortable clothes/shoes, and be ready to sweat to increase strength and endurance. As it gets warmer out, this is a great way to be in shape for hiking and other outdoor activities! Check it out at swingsweat.com.

BolderBOULDER

Heads up- we'll be dancing the BolderBOULDER again this year on Memorial Day! Stay tuned for more details.

Friendly Faces Cards

At Boulder Swing, we believe community is the most important thing, even above the dancing (gasp!). We will continue to have Friendly Faces Dance Cards every Monday night and at our dances at SKEYE. When you take a card, you have to fill in the names of five people you either have never danced with or haven't danced with in at least a month. Once you complete the card (can be in one night or over the course of multiple nights), turn it in to be put in a prize drawing! It's our little way of saying thank you for dancing with people you may not know, because it makes our community so much better!

Our Blog

We need your help! We want to start adding more content to our website blog, and we want to have voices from many of our dancers! ((I know you don't want to just hear my babble all the time!)) You don't have to be an advanced dancer- we would love to hear you write about anything you're interested in related to swing dancing. Some topic ideas: vintage fashion, swing dance history, music, places to swing dance or a cool dance event you went to, your experience with dancing...

If you are interested or want to chat about a topic to write about, please email sarah@boulderswingdance.com.

Just one more quick note:

Online reviews actually help us out a lot! We'd love to hear about your experiences on Google or Yelp.
