We're warming up this season with a huge line-up of classes, dances, and events just for you! We're back at it with our Flatiron Stomp Monday nights, where we have classes for all levels, and a social dance. Then at SKEYE Brewing we're hosting our beginners lesson and on the 26th we're having another social dance with live music. Also join us for a slow dance workshop on Sunday, April 9th, and a Swing Movie on Friday, April 21st.
Monday's at Kake's
We start a new Level 1 Swing series this month on April 3rd from 8-9 PM. If you are new to swing dancing, this is where you should start.
If you've completed a month of Level 1, then you're ready to start our Level 1.5 from 7-8 PM. This month we'll be building on material from Level 1 while teaching dancers the fundamentals needed to progress to level 2.
Level 2 will be from 8-9 PM and is for those who've taken two months of 1.5. This month we're on our Charleston series. Partner Charleston is an important part of modern swing dancing. This month introduces side-by-side Charleston and tandem Charleston.
For students who've been through all four of our Level 2 material, our Level 2.5 courses are just for you! From 7-8 PM join us for our advanced curriculum.
After class, from 9 PM-10:30 PM we'll have our regular weekly dance. Staying for the social dance is a great way to try out moves you learn from lessons, as well as get to know your classmates, and it's free if you take a class.
ON APRIL 3rd Jeremy Mohney and his band are playing for us, so stick around for some great live music!
Wednesday's at SKEYE
Join us for classes on Wednesdays at SKEYE Brewing! We've now offering Level 1.5 at 6:30 to anyone who's been with us for a month, and Level 1 for beginners are 7:30. The awesome thing about making it to Level 1.5 means you can stay for Level 1 for free. We've found this not only makes our higher level students better, but helps beginners improve as well.
The curriculum will be the same as on Mondays, so if you miss a class one week, you can make it up on the other night. SKEYE Brewing is a more intimate class setting, and has the bonus of a 30-minute practice session after class to ask our instructors questions, and share a drink with your classmates.
ON APRIL 26th we're celebrating some special occasions with a social dance! We'll honor Count Basie who passed away on April 26th 1984, and we'll be celebrating two birthdays: Ella Fitzgerald's (on the 25th), and someone a little closer to home, Mr. Jeremy Mohney! He's decided to spend his birthday playing for us, so lets get a big turn out and show him lots of love! Dance goes from 8:30-10 PM.
Slow Dance Workshop
Sometimes a slower swing, jazz, or blues tune comes on and it just doesn’t feel right to Charleston and even swinging out is a challenge. Slow dancing (typically 110 beats per minute or slower) is a great time to really listen to the music and your partner, work on good balance, and bust out some smooth moves and fun connection play!
This workshop Freeman will introduce current swing dancers to the shared roots of blues and swing, how to slow down and control your swing moves, and how to add other movement ideas that are complementary to slower tempos. And even if you don’t like slow dancing, working on slow technique will absolutely improve your dancing across all tempos.
This workshop will run from 12:30-3:30 PM on Sunday, April 9th at Kake's Studios. This is a focused 3-hour class so bring a drink/snack if you wish and get ready to improve your slow dancing!
$35 ($30 for students) or 3 punches on your BSD punch card
Experience Required: It is recommended that you have 4 or more months of progressive swing dance classes to take this workshop. You should be comfortable with 8-count and 6-count swing basics: swingout, circle, promenade, side pass (L or R with turns), send out/bring in, and the sugar push. Knowing these will allow you to adapt quickly to this new material.
Thanks to everyone who joined in on the Celestial Seasoning's Tea Tour! The peppermint room still brings a squint to my eyes!
For April, we're heading to the movies! There's a swing dance documentary titled "Alive and Kicking" and we're going as a group to see it Friday, the 21st at 6:45 at the Bodecker Theater (ate the Dairy Arts Center). Get your tickets early!
