We can't wait to share all that we have planned for the month of February for you! It's Black History month, so we're taking the opportunity to share clips of those who created and made our dance famous. Join us Wednesday's at SKEYE Brewing and Monday's at Kake's for lessons and social dancing.
Monday's at Kakes
We start a new Level 1 Swing series this month on February 6th from 8-9 PM. If you are new to swing dancing, this is where you should start.
If you've completed a month of Level 1, then you're ready to start our Level 1.5 from 7-8 PM. This month we'll be building on material from Level 1 while teaching dancers the fundamentals needed to progress to level 2.
Level 2 will be from 8-9 PM and is for those who've taken two months of 1.5. Due to Black History month, we're jumping ahead to our Savoy material. In this class you'll learn the moves they danced back at the Savoy Ballroom, where the Lindy came to life.
For students who've been through all of our Level 2 material, our Level 2.5 courses are just for you! This month we're focusing on swing out technique.
After class, from 9 PM-10:30 PM we'll have our regular weekly dance. Staying for the social dance is a great way to try out moves you learn from lessons, as well as get to know your classmates, and it's free if you take a class.
ON FEBRUARY 6TH Jeremy Mohney and his band are playing for us, so stick around for some great live music!
Wednesday's at SKEYE Brewing
We're offering Level 1 AND Level 1.5 at SKEYE Brewing too! The material covered in the Wednesday Longmont classes will be identical to the material covered in the Monday classes in Boulder. This means that if you need to miss a Wednesday class you can make it up on Monday (and vice-versa). Want more practice? Now you can take both series at the same time to accelerate your learning.
Classes start at 6:30, February 1st for Level 1.5, and Level 1 will follow from 7:30-8:30. After classes there will be a 30 minute practice (free) where you can try out your new moves, hang out with your classmates, and ask the instructors any questions you might have.
Dance Ambassador Program
Our dance ambassador program got a revamp in 2017 and we want you to join! Here at Boulder Swing, we pride ourselves in community, and this program is one of the reasons we are successful. Being a dance ambassador means welcoming the new students to our dance world and helping them grow. In turn, we're committed to helping you grow as well! If you're interested in special practice groups, and would like to help, check out the application here. We're looking for 12 ambassadors so act now!
Performance Troupe Tryouts
We are starting an ongoing intermediate performance team at Boulder Swing Dance, the Flatiron Flyers! There is no limit to the number of individuals on the team, and we will be partnering people up. However, everyone is required to try out. You will be required to demonstrate proficiency over a base set of skills in order to qualify for the team. Tryouts will happen Mondays Feb 6th and Feb 13 from 9:00-10:00 in the small room at Kakes during the dance. For more information, check the website.
Join us this month to watch the Super Bowl LI at Krister's. Bring some snacks, maybe some games and hang out with us. Beforehand, to celebrate Black History Month, we have some really great footage of the original Lindy Dancers of Harlem that we'll try to share with you before the game. Check Facebook for more information.
Black History Month
February is Black History Month. This month Boulder Swing will be highlighting the African American heritage and history of Lindy Hop. A portion of any profits we make this month will be donated to the Junior Jitterbugs, an organization that provides an after school program to teach underprivileged children swing dancing. The organization has done an incredible job taking at risk youth and giving them a community as well as a new skill set. Here is a video about the Junior Jitterbugs:
