9/29 – Level 4 (7:00-8:00) & Level 3 (8:15-9:15)
What will be taught in Level 4?
Nick & Jamica have prepared a great curriculum for the level 4 students. The class is titled: All Technique, All Day, E’ry Day!
This class will be simply hard. All about keepin’ those triple steps rollin’ and using connection where ya want it and when ya want it.
Each class students will learn a part of a choreography that will be set up as if we where social dancing. Each class will focus on the techniques of leading and following as well as great social move that Jamica and I love using.
We will strive to pass on how to keep a dance moving, themed dancing, listening to the music, techniques, and great lead and follow movement.
What will be taught in Level 3?
The Level 3 (8:15-9:15) curriculum will be based off of the audition on 8/18. After the audition, Nick & Jamica will evaluate the BSD students and design a Level 3 curriculum targeted at areas of improvement.
The Level 3 class is open to all Level 2, 3 & 4 dancers. Generally the material will focus on all those little details that are necessary for improving.
This Saturday will be hosting our monthly Saturday dance at the Avalon:
What: 1st Saturday Dance
Where: Avalon Ballroom (6185 Arapahoe Road)
Class: 7:30-8:30 $15 (includes dance)
Dance: 8:30-12:00 $5
Also, this Saturday we’ll be featuring Krister Shalm in our new Swing Chat Series:
There’s a lot to learn about swing dancing – and not all of it involves physical movement.
Now introducing: The Swing Chat Series brought to you by Boulder Swing Dance!
What is it?
The Swing Chat series is going to be dedicated to learning about Lindy Hop, Balboa, the music, the era, and the culture. Each class will have a specific topic and we’ll bring in a guest expert that will lead a discussion/talkback/lecture on a variety of topics within the Swing culture.
When is it?
We’ll host a class on the 1st Saturday of each month from 7:30-8:30(ish) before our dance. The class will cost $15, and you’ll get into the dance for free (yes, you may use your punchcard for the Swing Chat).
What are the types of things that I will learn?
Lindy Hop/swing dancing really is its own culture. Some of the talks will include the following:
Lindy Hop History
Vintage Dancing in Film (i.e. Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Busby Berkely & others)
Lindy Hop Today
… and much more
Awesome! When is the next Swing Chat, and what will be covered?
The next Swing Chat will be before our dance on July 5th, and Krister Shalm (international physicist) will be talking about physics and Lindy Hop. In addition to his suave dancing, Krister is an internationally known physicist! He’s delivered speeches all around the world, and he’s given two separate tedTalks. They call him the Dancing Physicist, and he’s got a lot to say about Lindy Hop, physics, and how they interact. This talk will be fun, interesting, and you’ll likely walk away with a better understanding of Lindy Hop, AND how the universe works.

Recently we (Boulder Swing Dance) have been working to improve our level 3 classes, and our goal is to bring higher quality instruction, and better consistency within the class. To accomplish this goal, we are going to try something new:
-The class series will last 2 full months
-The class will be audition based (auditions will happen on the first week, the series will begin the following week)
-Every 8 week class series will offer a new & fabulous local instructor
The April-May classes will feature the new Colorado implant, Jesse Hanus! Auditions for this series will begin on 4/7, and the entire series will start on 4/14 and end on 5/19. Here are some relevant questions and details:
Auditions?! What? When? And How?
-Anybody and everybody can audition!
-Auditions are intended to be fun, and low-pressure. The purpose is to showcase your dancing for the instructors, and the instructors will choose specific dancers to focus their attention in the weeks to come.
-The audition on 4/7 will focus on social dancing (slow, medium, fast), basics (slow, medium, fast), and a short/fun solo routine. We will rotate partners for each section.
-After the audition – we’ll e-mail everyone who tried out, and let you know who made it in the series
-If the instructors select you, we expect you to be able to attend the series – you were chosen for a reason
What if I didn’t make the cut?
-First and foremost – don’t worry about it, and definitely don’t take it personal. The instructors have a specific agenda, and they chose dancers that are the best fit for that agenda. You’re well loved, valued, and important to Boulder Swing Dance
-Also we want to empower you! The Level 3 class will last from 7:00-8:00, but from 8:15-9:15 the same instructors are going to be teaching a series on “how to become a level 3 student.” They’ll be teaching the things the value most about partner dancing, and they share their best tips and tricks. This class will be open to all level 2 and level 3 dancers.
